United Kingdom In Need Of Information Security Professionals

Cyber criminals and the acts of hacking, security breaches, the theft of information and cyber security in general continues to grow in size and depth. Therefore, there is a greater need and demand to fill the position of information security specialists and professionals. The United Kingdom realizes this and is holding a nationwide competition in order to locate those that meet the criteria and ability to become the next generation of cyber security professionals. The competition offers prizes including study at various universities and training courses. This way Britain will be able to supply the many positions needed to combat against cyber criminals.

Britain's Lady Neville Jones wants the collection of available and able professionals to increase and feels their cyber security challenge and competition is a very innovative method to attract and locate individuals towards a new and very necessary profession. Kevin Streater of the Open University who is also partnered with the competition and challenge also believes the United Kingdom needs to bring more professionals into the field of computer security. “It is a very large undertaking. Those that previously arrived have moved on, advancing into into different positions while those that arrived in the 1960s and 1970s have retired.”

Tony Dyhouse, a computer security expert mentioned to the British Broadcasting Corporation, people do not realize and know how much work and effort goes on behind the scenes to provide the Internet with as much security as possible. “There is more than meets the eye in this venture. Most people only view the tip when there is a lot more underneath.” The competition officially begins July 26, and will have two separate challenges and competitions. One of the competitions is a virtual competition, a treasure hunt involving searching for and locating flaws on a pre-created dummy website and providing answers to questions about what they saw. This part of the challenge would take a participant two hours to finish and will be administered on several days between the months of September to December. The second challenge, a face to face challenge involves teams that take over a network that is simulated and have to defend that network against a variety of attacks performed by security professionals. Those who win these first two competitions will move ahead to the United Kingdom Master Class where they will perform duties with others in defending a completely different simulated network. An associated digital forensics competition that is currently being conducted will have the winners of that challenge also participate in the Master Class competition. Over 30 different prizes are available for participants to win including cash money to assist in paying for university computer security course fees as well as various training schemes and classes.
